Well, it's game day, and Chris, the a2a starting quarterback is on the shelf. He’s had a terrible week of asthmatic bronchitis, zero sleep, and exhaustion. Sadly, he has been scratched from the starting lineup. Let’s call in the backup, Dave Grein.
A couple weeks ago, while watching the AFC conference final (I’m a Bills fan), it was mentioned that the 59th Super Bowl was just around the corner for the Eagles and Chiefs.
Since I’m 67, I did some quick math and realized that I have been around for every one of them!
In 1967, Super Bowl I, the very same Kansas City Chiefs were beaten by the Green Bay Packers and Vince Lombardi 35-10. The game’s halftime show, I thought could have been headlined by Elvis or the Rolling Stones… but no, it was Al Hirt with The University of Arizona Symphonic Marching Band. The winner’s share that year was $15,000 per player.
There has been so many great teams in the last 58 years, the Raiders, Steelers, Dolphins, Cowboys and 49’ers. And so many great MVPs, Starr, Namath, Bradshaw, Staubach, Montana, Brady and Mahomes.
Funny, that I can remember all those teams and all those players like it was yesterday, but now I forget where I put the car keys and my wallet.
The half time shows… I looked at Wikipedia and saw that long before we watched Madonna and Bruce Springsteen, there was Ella FitzGerald. Andy Williams, and Lionel Hampton. Thankfully, the Stones finally did show up in 2006 for Super Bowl XL.
This year the Chiefs go for the three-peat against the Philadelphia Eagles. The winner’s share this year will be $171,000 per man. Both Donald Trump and Taylor Swift will be at the game, but I really doubt that they will be sitting together. The halftime show will be led by Kendrick Lamar (no thanks). The game will be watched in 180 countries, or as The Tonight show host Jimmy Fallon said it would be 179, if the U.S. takes over Canada by Saturday!
And here's a thought that just flew in my head, if I am lucky enough to live to be 99, just like Dick Van Dyke, who we featured in our newsletter back in December, and I sit down to watch the big game, for me, it will be Super Bowl XCI! (I had to rely on Google for the Roman numerals).
If you have any favorite Super Bowl memories to share, please leave us a comment.
Enjoy the game! And the halftime show…
Here’s a recap of the Super Bowl for those like me:
